Listen up! is a 10-week enrichment music class for children that focuses on the fundamental elements of music (Pitch, Rhythm, Timbre, Dynamics) and their related concepts. Having a strong understanding of these fundamental elements enables children to grasp what composers and musicians try to do through music: express actions and emotions! For example, why do listeners become tense every time Darth Vader’s Imperial March theme music is heard? Is it because of the tempo? The dynamics? Is it the specific instruments being played? Is it a combination of all three?! After taking this class your child will know the answer. Identifying and appreciating nuances in music is an enjoyable, lifelong skill.
Each week, students will engage in hands-on activities and games as they review and apply the elements. They will listen to many well-known pieces of music, from pop to classical, and will be exposed to and play a variety of instruments, creating their own expressive music! Research clearly shows that music has a very positive impact on a child’s brain and overall development. This class is the perfect opportunity for such growth, but most importantly, it’s fun!
